Base words scrawled in pen on a laminated surface. The toilet stall is the domain of Cubicle Man. In common with his ancestors, Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal, the desperation to visually communicate complex thought through the most direct means available urges him onwards. The stench of stale urine, bleach and the hum of defecation are but grist to his mill, fuelling his inspiration. Unlike his antecedents, Cubicle Man remains a private fellow. He prefers an intimate and anonymous meeting of minds, to bold brash statements of territorial dominance. He is always prepared. Biro in hand. Or perhaps a Sharpie.
“The series began by asking friends what their favourite toilet cubicle graffiti was. This really seemed to strike a chord, and the results were so fruitful and varied that I decided to post for contributions on social media. The results never cease to surprise and delight.”
Kevin McCormick is a Berlin based artist with a rabid interest in the queer, the uncanny and the built environment. His series of drawings Cubicle Man pulls together anecdotal materials from the everyday urban experience and transforms them in a manner that accentuates their inherent wit, pathos and profundity.
